Researchers from the Institut Quantique Occitan (IQO) have identified for the first time the coherent forward scattering (CFS) peak, a phenomenon predicted more than a decade ago for waves propagating in disordered media. Using a Bose–Einstein condensate trapped in an optical lattice, the researchers observed how a matter wave can retain a “memory” of its initial position. This result sheds new light on how waves preserve information about their initial state in chaotic systems.
